Common mistake #3 : LACK OF COMMUNICATION

There are a lot of salon owners out there who don’t really understand the value of great communication, and by that, I mean one-on-one meetings.

I know really well how busy life in a salon can get and so it’s really easy to let a planned meeting slip by and be put off until another day. The other danger is having a meeting where you just go through the motions and your team sit there silent as the grave.

A one-on-one meeting should be about having a clear plan laid out for the week with achievable goals and giving your team the opportunity to speak up and say what’s on their mind. It’s also a time to share their wins of the week and reflect on losses together to see what went wrong, but also how they fixed it.

One-to-one meetings are the bomb, it’s so important to have them, so please don’t cut corners with your meeting. Make sure that you spend what I say, your insurance policy.

If you were to buy everyone on your team a cup of coffee each week and spend 15 to 30 minutes with them asking this simple question, “How can I help you? What do you need?” Then you just wait and see what happens.

Now, at first, they might seem a little bit lumpy and they’ll be thinking, “What’s going on here?” But it won’t take long before your culture changes and they get the understanding that you really do care and you want this to be the best place that person has ever worked, and that’s going to take some time on your behalf to communicate well.
