Continuing on with revealing the Seven Common Mistakes Salon Owners Make, today we will talk about something a lot of people SAY they do, BUT in reality rarely do it effectively; then wonder why they don’t feel comfortable leaving their team alone to GSD.
Common mistake #4 : LACK OF TRAINING
At The ZING Project we always ask our clients, “Do you train your team on a regular basis?” They always confidently say, YES. Then we say, “Okay… so show us an example of a training plan you use.”
That’s when it gets awkward and we have to watch the uneasy look on their faces as they try to sort of come up with something vaguely like a plan, on the spot.
But vague is NOT good. Actually planning your training out to the last detail is essential to achieve an outcome where your staff actually learn and retain the info and techniques they are training to do.
You should always know in advance what the training is going to be about, have a set day, time and duration to do it, and make sure that you have a model and a clear subject to learn ready to go.
You should also know clear outcomes. If the training’s on particular colour work, when will this person be able to work on the floor without you helping?
The other vital thing for successful training is assessment. It’s really important that you complete that assessment and you make a list of all the things that they can do in a day or a week, and then ask them to assess themselves over all the things.
This makes it really clear which things they don’t know about. Sometimes they might shy away from doing certain styles because when you ask them, they’ve got no training. They don’t know how to do it, so they just avoid it.
For example, if someone doesn’t know how to do hair up, not only do they not suggest it to their clients, they talk clients out of having their hair up because they’re not capable, and that’s just not good enough because it affects your sales at the end of the day.
